Luzerne Music Center
A summer Music Camp and Performing Arts Center, where Philadelphia Orchestra Members Teach and Perform
Located in the foothills of New York State's Adirondack Park, in the Town of Lake Luzerne...
|

Luzerne Music Center offers an international
summer
music camp program for student instrumentalists, vocalists,
composers and conductors ages 11 through 18. Its
curriculum includes private lessons,
student chamber and large ensemble instruction, Symphony
Orchestra experience and attendance to
weekly faculty recitals and professional concerts.

Luzerne Music Center maintains special relationships with
the Philadelphia Orchestra
and
New
York City Ballet, and takes its students to their performances at the
Saratoga Performing Arts Center
and Spa Little Theatre on a weekly basis.
In addition, Philadelphia Orchestra members present Master
Classes for all instruments on the Luzerne Music Center's campus during Senior
Session.
The Center is also home to the Luzerne Chamber Music
Festival, which features professional artists from the
Luzerne Chamber Players, members of the Philadelphia Orchestra
and other renowned chamber artists from the U.S. and abroad. All
students are required to attend these performances.

Luzerne Music Center is also located in an IDEAL setting
for a very memorable summer -- overlooking a beautiful
pristine lake and surrounded by picturesque mountains.

Situated on a 20-acre wooded campus, with its
own private beach, Luzerne Music Center
provides a perfect environment for students to practice and
perform their music, both indoors and outdoors, and participate
in a number of outdoor recreational activities.

FACILITIES AND CAMPUS LIFE
HOUSING: Luzerne is a Camp where students live in wooden cabins equipped with
bunks, electricity, and limited storage space, calling for
the use of foot lockers, which may be tucked neatly under the
bunks. Students are housed four to six per cabin, with one
counselor for every six students.
Counselor's cabins are
interspersed between campers' cabins, assuring that
supervision is maintained at all times. Indoor plumbing and
completely modern shower and bathing facilities are adjacent
to the cabins. (Pic by April Shen)
PRACTICE and CONCERT SPACE: Includes the
Orchestra Shed, Lodge, Chapel, Piano Pavilion, Keyboard Korner, Practice Building, Boathouse and screen house studios.
MEALS and "A HOME AWAY FROM HOME": Head cook Sally Deuel
(below, far right), husband Ken, and Holly Fisk are noted for
preparing well
balanced, healthy, home-style meals and snacks. (Special
religious and personal dietary needs accommodated with advance
notification.) Their crew is also ready to help students
survive the elements
of Adirondack camp life -- rain or shine, cold or hot weather.

CAMP STORE: Available
for sundries and snacks daily.
MEDICAL: A small infirmary is maintained with
nurse on duty 24/7. In event of serious illness or emergency,
students are taken to nearby hospitals in Glens Falls,
Saratoga or the Capital District. All medical expenses
and insurance are the responsibility of parents and/or
guardians.
SUPERVISION/COUNSELING:
Members of Luzerne's
instructional and counseling staff are mature young
professional performers and teachers possessing skills in
waterfront, sports and other recreational activities.
They provide counseling, serve as excellent role models for students,
and participate daily in recreational and social activities.
All members of the instructional staff are required to assist
in supervision and enforcement of all camp rules and
regulations.
(In the picture above, students dress up as
counselors for skit night. Any resemblance to real
individuals is purely coincidental!) (This and picture below

RECREATION:
Campus activities include
swimming, canoeing, sailing, table tennis, basketball,
softball, soccer, volleyball, kickball, movies, dances, and campfires,
as well as Ultimate Frisbee, above.
Off campus trips include whitewater rafting, hiking, walks
into town for tennis matches and ice cream, and field trips to
the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Spa
Little Theatre.
